Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

SITTHPR303A - Tow and site a recreational vehicle safely

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for towing of recreational vehicle.

  2. Check and confirm the towing capacity of the towing vehicle and adhere to tow-bar capacity.
  3. Attach the recreational vehicle to towing vehicle in accordance with manufacturer's and state or territory specifications, requirements and regulations.
  4. Conduct pre-operational checks on towing vehicle and recreational vehicle, taking account of all safety considerations.

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the following is essential:

safe manoeuvring, towing and siting of a range of different recreational vehicles according to regulatory requirements

applying OHS policies and procedures relevant to driving and towing a recreational vehicle.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

access to a range of different recreational vehicles and off road locations to tow and site recreational vehicles.

Methods of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct observation of the candidate preparing and towing a recreational vehicle and manoeuvring it into a space

oral and written questions to test knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements

review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of the candidate's on-the-job performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.

Guidance information for assessment

Employability skills embedded in this unit should be assessed holistically in the context of the job role and with other relevant units that make up the skill set or qualification.

Required Skills and Knowledge

The following skills must be assessed as part of this unit:

communication skills to advise others of safety issues associated with vehicle towing and siting

literacy skills to interpret regulations and requirements in relation to vehicle towing and siting

numeracy skills to make calculations required for towing and siting

technical skills to use towing, siting and other recreational vehicle equipment.

The following knowledge must be assessed as part of this unit:

weight-to-vehicle towing ratios set by state and territory authorities and manufacturer requirements

pre-towing checking procedures

typical challenges associated with the towing and siting of recreational vehicles, and ways to address these

general duty-of-care requirements.

Range Statement

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording in the performance criteria is detailed below.

The towing vehicle may be:

two wheel drive

four wheel drive

truck

van

specialised towing truck or unit

tractor.

Pre-operational checks on towing vehicle and recreational vehicle may include:

visual checking of vehicle

checking and topping up of fluid levels

checking of tyre pressures

checking of operation of vehicle lights and indicators

checking of brakes.

Obstacles or hazards may include:

steep inclines or sharp curves

uneven surfaces

oil, rocks, mud and water on road

animals and objects on road

pedestrians and children

trees and branches

other vehicles, recreational vehicles and tents.
